What Transactional Email Does and How Billing Works

Understand what the product includes, how it differs from Newsletter, and where to see your allowance and rates.

Transactional Email sends the everyday messages people expect from your business: order receipts, password resets, booking confirmations and contact-form notifications.

It is a separate product from Newsletter. Transactional Email connects to the website or software that triggers those messages. Newsletter manages subscribers, campaigns and marketing emails. Buying one does not buy the other.

What you can do

  • Send from a verified domain you own.
  • Connect software through SMTP or the send API.
  • Design reusable email templates.
  • Look up sent messages and delivery problems.
  • Manage pending scheduled sends.
  • Check blocked addresses.
  • Receive mail in the dashboard after setting up receiving addresses.
  • Notify your application when delivery events happen.

You can use the transactional product without buying hosting or Newsletter. Some hosting plans also include an allowance for the everyday mail your hosted sites send.

See the plans and your current allowance

Open Transactional email. The page shows your current usage and the plans available to your account. If you see example figures, they are there to show how the product works; they are not your sending history.

Your monthly allowance can combine a hosting allowance and a purchased transactional email allowance. The account's page shows the breakdown and the rate for any extra sends. If your plan is pay as you go, it shows that instead.

The usage count resets on the first of the month. All connected apps share the account's allowance. Newsletter sends do not use the transactional allowance.

Keep control of sending

The Monthly send cap limits the number of messages the account sends, including transactional and newsletter email. It is separate from the transactional allowance. Read the usage and caps guide before choosing a limit.

Who can set it up

Your company permissions determine which settings you can change. If an action is unavailable, ask your account owner or the person who manages that part of your account. Purchasing plans and changing the account cap require billing access.
